Fire risk management systems. Requirements with guidance for use

What is this standard about?

This new British Standard details the requirements of an organizational fire risk management system, the aim of which is to minimize risks to life, property, mission continuity and the environment from the threat of fire which arises as a result of its activities.

The standard can be used by any organization regardless of its type or size. The standard will be used by:

• Fire authorities
• Risk managers
• Compliance managers
• Fire safety managers and engineers
• Fire risk assessors
• Fire and rescue services
• Facilities managers and facilities management companies
• Landlords
• Servicing companies
• Anyone interested in organizational governance, risk and compliance

Why should you use this standard?

It specifies requirements for a fire risk management system which will enhance organizational fire risk management, fire safety, and life and property protection.

The management system can be applied to organizations that operate on multiple sites; in separate management divisions within a single organization; or at individual premises within a single organization. This standard can be applied nationally and internationally.

BS 9997:

• Has an annex which cross maps its requirements with legal requirements in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland
• Provides additional guidance under each requirement to aid understanding and implementation
• Incorporates the Fire Sector Federation’s work on competencies in Fire Risk Management which is similar to the approach taken in PAS 79 which now includes the competencies for fire risk assessors.

What's changed in this update?

This standard replaces PAS 7:2013 and takes the opportunity to deal with some obvious tweaks and typos, and to provide more detail within the model pro-formas.
